Flight Instructor Renewals

Introduction

You have basically three options for renewing your CFI Certificate with a DPE.  Option one, add a new rating.  Option two, you can retake a test for one of the ratings you already hold. Please see the appropriate test prep page for details on these options.  Option three is that you may take a Flight Instructor Refresher Clinic. Option four is to renew based upon your CFI activity.  This page details the procedures for options three and four.

Other options are available to renew, but DPEs can't perform those renewals so they're not listed here.

Pricing

Please visit our Price List for current pricing information.

Required Documents

Please bring your Passport, or a US Driver's license.  Foreign driver's licenses are not acceptable.

Bring your original pilot certificate, CFI certificate, and your medical certificate.

You'll need to prepare an application in IACRA, using either the "Refresher Course" path if you did a FIRC, or the "Activity" path if you're renenwing based on your activity and pass rate.

Please have your IACRA login credentials readily accessible.

Please bring your FIRC completion certificate, or your CFI activity records if you're renewing based on pass rate.

Application Procedure

You'll need to prepare an application in IACRA.  You do not need to have another instructor sign the recommendation.

Please bring all of the documents listed above.

Your flight hours in IACRA are allowed to be left blank, but I strongly suggest that you keep these totals up to date since it serves as a backup record of your flight time.  If you have your total hours on your application, please bring your logbook so I can validate your totals.

We are required to meet in person. The FAA does not currently permit the issuance of a ground instructor certificate via videoconference.
